Arena 14: A Grimm Age

The morning breaks to a familiar routine for most of you. Bright and early the Tributes are roused by their escorts and stylists, escorted from their rooms and to the waiting hovercraft. The flight takes them a few hours out from the Capitol and after landing they are escorted quickly into an underground complex to be prepped. Tributes will find to their dismay that their outfits are a little less practical and a little more costume this time around, the ratio of which depends entirely on the whims of their stylist. Peacekeepers will appear almost immediately after they've finished dressing to put them in the waiting launch tubes.

They rise up from the ground and -- phew, what's that smell? The Tribute's look around them to see a full-on medieval village, constructed entirely from wood and thatch. There are empty pens that might have once held pigs and chickens attached to the houses and a well is visible down the street. What commands attention though is what's in the centre of the village square where the Tribute's are standing; a pyre built around a tall wooden stake. Those who look amongst the piles of twigs and wood will see the gleam of weapons, as well as backpacks containing survival supplies. This is your Cornucopia, Tributes.

Anyone who tries to look further afield, over the roofs of the houses, will see the main feature of this arena looming above them. The castle stands tall and forbidding, a monstrous sized building of stone with flags bearing the emblem of the Capitol flying from its parapets. From here, if they squint, they can see the drawbridge is down and the portcullis is open. For now.

A triumphant sounding of trumpets is what signals this arena's beginning and with it those Tribute's with powers may feel a sudden tingling in their bones, a rush of energy as those powers are restored to them. Any with constantly active abilities will find a light illuminates immediately over their head, signalling that something about this powered arena is going to be a little different from the last. For those who try to use their powers right off the bat... well, they'll be in for a nasty shock.

[[OOC: A mod reminder that this arena is designed to punish Tribute's for using powers. If your character will attempt to use powers at any time in week 1 of the arena it needs to be reported here to be RNG'd by the mods for chances of success or injury.

There will be a thread on Death Roll posts for subsequent weeks power usage to be reported.]]

Bayard, too, has been advised not to attempt the Cornucopia - Tabris and Cullen have given him instructions to not watch and to head for high ground, and though part of him yearns to prove himself in a fight, another part (what he cannot yet know is the wiser, more mature part, the bottom edge of his teenage years soaking into his prepubescence) wants to stay as far from the fighting as possible. And so he does as they say. Dressed as a knight of old, he scrambles away from the fight.

But not watching carnage can't spare his ears, and soon enough he's curled at the bottom of a tree, his hands over his ears even though the screaming and rending of flesh has stopped. He's not even close enough to hear it anymore, but it echoes in his ears.

That's why he doesn't hear Tiffany coming until she's close enough to be dangerous, but he's small enough that he, too, is hard to see. And it doesn't occur to him to be frightened of a woman in a dress, even a mutilated one.

"Hello, ma'am. I don't mean you any harm."
tucky: (sorry about your mile-long vagina)

Tiffany knows there are children that are sent into the arenas - in fact, she knows that the Tributes used to be nothing but children. But despite that, she hasn't seen very many child Tributes around since she'd arrived in the Capitol. There had been Sandy, who had been one of the first people she'd met, and then in the arena there had been that weird guy in the nun costume - but he'd been more of a teenager, and he'd looked and acted a lot less vulnerable than this small boy, curled and cowering.

For all of Tiffany's many, many faults, she doesn't hesitates before lowering her weapon.

"Relax. I ain't going after no kids."

"And I won't hurt a lady," Bayard says, uncurling from the base of the tree, hands shaking slightly as he fondles his outfit for pockets to warm them in and finds nothing but the terrible scratchy painted chainmail. "It ain't you I'm afraid of."

Of course, he doesn't know how to explain that it's not that he's afraid of danger so much as the sounds of the Cornucopia crawling out of his memory of them into the present, the rending noise of flesh and snaps of bone becoming somehow current. Or that perhaps his brain will never stop echoing them, that the noises are trapped forever in his skull.

"'Fact, it ain't anything I'm afraid of," he says, trying to sound as if he means it. "Are you alright? Your dress is torn."

Tiffany snorts at the "lady" comment. She doesn't want to be thought of as weaker or less capable of fighting because of her gender, but at the same time, she doubts that the opinion of a kid is something that the Capitol people are going to put much stock in. Might as well just let it slide.

"I tore it up on purpose, 'cause it wasn't easy to move in before. Don't look as good now, but..." She gives a little shrug. Hopefully the sponsors and stylists will understand.

"There are times to look proper and the Arena ain't it," Bayard says, with an edge of condescension like he's giving her a pass for having her dress all a mess, but truthfully it's because he's trying to cram what he knows to be logical into the genteel traditions he was raised with. One has to give, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't hurt him some.

He gets to his feet, a little bit of mud on his silly knight costume. "I'm glad you're alright. I don't reckon it was easy to run away from all that back when your dress was a proper skirt."
tucky: (just skip the music)

His choice of words - ain't, reckon - put her more at ease than anything else so far. They're familiar, and his accent is too, a little bit.

"Nah, it wasn't, which was why I had to fix it. I don't know why they put us in this stuff. Maybe getting out of it's part of the challenge." She shifts from foot to foot, awkwardly. Kids make her feel weird sometimes. "So you been in here before?"

"I think they find it entertaining. It makes it more like a story to them, to see us all gussied up like we were going to the circus or on a stage show." Bayard notices the way she's shifting foot to foot and realizes the source of her discomfort, and feels a bit abashed that he can't just age a few years for her convenience. He tries setting her at ease with a smile.

"Once before. It weren't so bad."

Tiffany can't help but wonder why the Capitol - the kind, benevolent Capitol that has done so much for her - would put chldren into the Arena. Surely they can't be that entertaining, can they? But then, in her heart of hearts, she isn't so sure why they want her, either. She doesn't have powers, or any important skills. The only thing that's special about her is being one of God's chosen, and nobody here seems to believe in God.

She makes a show of looking around, then turns back to Bayard. "So what, you all alone out here? Don't you got people who wanna look out for you and protect you?"
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Amused)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-06-22 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
He feels a bit of a pang, knowing that the more time he spends out in the woods the more he's got to be worrying Cullen and Maxwell and Tabris sick.

"I sure do. They told me to head for high ground, and so that's where I'm heading. Toward the castle. You're welcome to come, if you like. I could escort you the way there, like a proper knight in shining armor." He grins, wide and bright at her despite his teeth being crooked and damaged. "You are already dressed like a princess."
tucky: (just skip the music)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-06-23 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Not like much of one," she retorts, tugging at her ripped sleeve. It isn't really her style at all, but it had been so pretty, and she almost feels bad about ruining it.

"... How old are you, anyway?" He's tiny, and had looked so vulnerable curled up at the base of that tree. Tiffany can't imagine using him as protection.
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Smile)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-06-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I've never seen one in the flesh, so I reckon you're the best princess I've seen." Bayard shrugs, holding his hand out to her, emboldened by the fantasy and the vainglory. "I'm twelve. Old enough, I reckon, to stop acting like a child all the time."
tucky: (go back on your meds)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-07-02 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
A tiny little ghost of a smile crosses her face at that first part. She likes being called the best, even as a joke. She hesitates... then shoots out her hand and takes his.

"Okay, fine. Fine. But twelve still sounds like a child to me, is all; you're fucking half my age."

Him being a child doesn't mean that she won't swear up a storm, apparently.
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Incredulous)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-07-10 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't look twenty..." Bayard scrunches up his face slightly, doing the math in his head, not skilled at it in the least. "Twenty-four."

He gives her hand a firm shake and then holds it as he 'escorts' her towards the castle.

"I never met a lady that cussed before I came here. Now I know lots of them who do. I never expected that."
tucky: (I'm so sorry about your loss‚ LOL)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-07-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
She shrugs again. "I'm little. And I got a young face, or... something. I been told something like that before. Where're you from that girls don't cuss?" She'd mentally placed him as being from somewhere near her, though his accent isn't quite the same.
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Amused)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-07-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Jefferson, Mississippi. What about you?" Her accent is foreign to him, but not so much that he can't pick up on a little of that homey casualness. "And it's not girls who don't cuss, it's ladies. But no one's supposed to, says my Granny. It's bad manners."
tucky: (go back on your meds)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-07-30 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Guess I'm not a lady, then." She doesn't seem too bothered by the idea. "'Cause I do it all the time, and I don't care about it at all."

She pauses before answering his question. "... Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. But it's District 1 now."
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Ow)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Well." Bayard taps at his chin, as if he's pondering something as hard as he can. "I've seen ladies do many things here I ain't seen ladies do before. I suppose maybe it's me who's wrong, and not a hundred ladies who're saying otherwise."

His eyes narrow a bit. "You don't support the Yankees, do you?"
tucky: (the chickens are taking over!)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-05 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
She shrugs. "I don't know, I never paid too much attention to baseball."

Oh, cross-cultural miscommunications.
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

i've been hoping someone would make that comment all game

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-08 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Baseball? Why would that need paying attention to?"

Bayard comes from a time before the MLB was even a twinkle in anyone's eye.
tucky: (well‚ that just makes me perspire)

LOL glad to please

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-08 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
"You asked me if I support the Yankees. They're a New York team." Another shrug. "We was more about football in my town. The Super Bowl and everything."
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-18 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Bayard blinks at her, face crinkling up into an expression of absolute consternation that gets more emphasized with each sentence.

"Ma'am, I reckon you might as well have just spoken French at me."
tucky: (the chickens are taking over!)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"You're the one who's talking about the Yankees. What're you so confused about?"
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
"The devil do Yankees got to do with baseball, though?" Bayard blinks, not offended but thoroughly confused. "Oh. Do we end up outlawing baseball in the Confederacy?"
tucky: (it's called Venezuelalization)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-26 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." The lightbulb goes off in her head. "You're talking about Civil War stuff! Only that ain't really a question I can answer, 'cause that war's been over for a real long time." She hesitates. "We had a Confederate flag in my house when I was growing up."
yoknapatawpha: (Default)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-09-05 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah." So this lady's from a time after the war too. Bayard should have known. "People around here have told me that we lost, but I reckon that that can't be true if you still have the flag in your house."
