Arena 14: A Grimm Age

The morning breaks to a familiar routine for most of you. Bright and early the Tributes are roused by their escorts and stylists, escorted from their rooms and to the waiting hovercraft. The flight takes them a few hours out from the Capitol and after landing they are escorted quickly into an underground complex to be prepped. Tributes will find to their dismay that their outfits are a little less practical and a little more costume this time around, the ratio of which depends entirely on the whims of their stylist. Peacekeepers will appear almost immediately after they've finished dressing to put them in the waiting launch tubes.

They rise up from the ground and -- phew, what's that smell? The Tribute's look around them to see a full-on medieval village, constructed entirely from wood and thatch. There are empty pens that might have once held pigs and chickens attached to the houses and a well is visible down the street. What commands attention though is what's in the centre of the village square where the Tribute's are standing; a pyre built around a tall wooden stake. Those who look amongst the piles of twigs and wood will see the gleam of weapons, as well as backpacks containing survival supplies. This is your Cornucopia, Tributes.

Anyone who tries to look further afield, over the roofs of the houses, will see the main feature of this arena looming above them. The castle stands tall and forbidding, a monstrous sized building of stone with flags bearing the emblem of the Capitol flying from its parapets. From here, if they squint, they can see the drawbridge is down and the portcullis is open. For now.

A triumphant sounding of trumpets is what signals this arena's beginning and with it those Tribute's with powers may feel a sudden tingling in their bones, a rush of energy as those powers are restored to them. Any with constantly active abilities will find a light illuminates immediately over their head, signalling that something about this powered arena is going to be a little different from the last. For those who try to use their powers right off the bat... well, they'll be in for a nasty shock.

[[OOC: A mod reminder that this arena is designed to punish Tribute's for using powers. If your character will attempt to use powers at any time in week 1 of the arena it needs to be reported here to be RNG'd by the mods for chances of success or injury.

There will be a thread on Death Roll posts for subsequent weeks power usage to be reported.]]

"Not like much of one," she retorts, tugging at her ripped sleeve. It isn't really her style at all, but it had been so pretty, and she almost feels bad about ruining it.

"... How old are you, anyway?" He's tiny, and had looked so vulnerable curled up at the base of that tree. Tiffany can't imagine using him as protection.

"I've never seen one in the flesh, so I reckon you're the best princess I've seen." Bayard shrugs, holding his hand out to her, emboldened by the fantasy and the vainglory. "I'm twelve. Old enough, I reckon, to stop acting like a child all the time."

A tiny little ghost of a smile crosses her face at that first part. She likes being called the best, even as a joke. She hesitates... then shoots out her hand and takes his.

"Okay, fine. Fine. But twelve still sounds like a child to me, is all; you're fucking half my age."

Him being a child doesn't mean that she won't swear up a storm, apparently.
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Incredulous)

"You don't look twenty..." Bayard scrunches up his face slightly, doing the math in his head, not skilled at it in the least. "Twenty-four."

He gives her hand a firm shake and then holds it as he 'escorts' her towards the castle.

"I never met a lady that cussed before I came here. Now I know lots of them who do. I never expected that."
tucky: (I'm so sorry about your loss‚ LOL)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-07-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
She shrugs again. "I'm little. And I got a young face, or... something. I been told something like that before. Where're you from that girls don't cuss?" She'd mentally placed him as being from somewhere near her, though his accent isn't quite the same.
yoknapatawpha: (Happy - Amused)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-07-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Jefferson, Mississippi. What about you?" Her accent is foreign to him, but not so much that he can't pick up on a little of that homey casualness. "And it's not girls who don't cuss, it's ladies. But no one's supposed to, says my Granny. It's bad manners."
tucky: (go back on your meds)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-07-30 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Guess I'm not a lady, then." She doesn't seem too bothered by the idea. "'Cause I do it all the time, and I don't care about it at all."

She pauses before answering his question. "... Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. But it's District 1 now."
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Ow)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Well." Bayard taps at his chin, as if he's pondering something as hard as he can. "I've seen ladies do many things here I ain't seen ladies do before. I suppose maybe it's me who's wrong, and not a hundred ladies who're saying otherwise."

His eyes narrow a bit. "You don't support the Yankees, do you?"
tucky: (the chickens are taking over!)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-05 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
She shrugs. "I don't know, I never paid too much attention to baseball."

Oh, cross-cultural miscommunications.
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

i've been hoping someone would make that comment all game

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-08 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Baseball? Why would that need paying attention to?"

Bayard comes from a time before the MLB was even a twinkle in anyone's eye.
tucky: (well‚ that just makes me perspire)

LOL glad to please

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-08 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
"You asked me if I support the Yankees. They're a New York team." Another shrug. "We was more about football in my town. The Super Bowl and everything."
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-18 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Bayard blinks at her, face crinkling up into an expression of absolute consternation that gets more emphasized with each sentence.

"Ma'am, I reckon you might as well have just spoken French at me."
tucky: (the chickens are taking over!)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"You're the one who's talking about the Yankees. What're you so confused about?"
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-08-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
"The devil do Yankees got to do with baseball, though?" Bayard blinks, not offended but thoroughly confused. "Oh. Do we end up outlawing baseball in the Confederacy?"
tucky: (it's called Venezuelalization)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-08-26 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." The lightbulb goes off in her head. "You're talking about Civil War stuff! Only that ain't really a question I can answer, 'cause that war's been over for a real long time." She hesitates. "We had a Confederate flag in my house when I was growing up."
yoknapatawpha: (Default)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-09-05 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah." So this lady's from a time after the war too. Bayard should have known. "People around here have told me that we lost, but I reckon that that can't be true if you still have the flag in your house."
tucky: (in the old days of about ten minutes ago)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-09-05 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah, ya'll lost. The Confederates did. But it's a cultural thing, you know?" She shrugs. "I ain't racist or anything." Except she is, but she's the kind of racist that doesn't know she's racist.
yoknapatawpha: (Sad - Pout)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-09-05 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah," Bayard says again, and something in his face seems to go out, like a little bit of hope has been entirely extinguished. He wants to believe so badly that they won, and yet it seems to bother no one that they didn't.

"What's racist?" The term didn't come into vogue until well after Bayard's childhood.
tucky: (who else's body have you guarded?)

cw: racism

[personal profile] tucky 2015-09-05 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"You know, hating coloreds. And Mexicans, Muslims... uh, I think hating anybody with different skin counts as racist. Chinese people..." She tries to think of more races off the top of her head, but can't quite manage it.
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Out in the Woods)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-09-10 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm afraid I don't know some of those words. Ain't Mexicans the people that been fighting for Texas? I didn't know they were n- coloreds." He's been told not to use the word he almost did, the one that was such common parlance when he was home that to say anything else would elicit strange looks.
tucky: (go back on your meds)

[personal profile] tucky 2015-09-13 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
"They're not, they're different. But people still say it's racist if you're mean to 'em. Of course, some people think everything's racist these days. Political correctness has gone wild."
yoknapatawpha: (Basic - Naw Son)

[personal profile] yoknapatawpha 2015-09-23 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
"What's that?" Bayard bites his lip and scratches at the back of his head. "'Political correctness'. Sounds like having the right political beliefs, but I don't understand politics much. Father says that's for when I'm a man, not a boy."
