ARENA 11-PaneMall
It’s pre-dawn when the Tributes are roused from their beds and sent to their tubes. Those who’d been imprisoned for the past few weeks had their heads covered before transport to the staging area, and there’s an air of confusion surrounding just about everything that’s happening until the stylists and managers arrive on the scene and try to calm everyone down. The reunions may be happy, but they're sadly very temporary.
The first clue that something strange is happening comes from their clothing: figure skating costumes with bright colors and sequins and ice skates strapped to their feet. Some may even find it difficult to stand with the blades on their feet, but as they're placed into the arena, all becomes clear. The mall skating rink seems quiet and quaint, especially after weeks of uncertainty and stress. Too bad the peace and quiet can’t last.

Above the ice rink (which houses all 100+ Tributes) there are floors with shops looking over them. Large, bright fluorescent lights dot the multi-storied ceiling and create a warm, nostalgic glow to the place. Benign music is piped in from various hidden speakers to compliment the intended mood of fun and commerce.

The countdown continues and the Tributes, some of whom haven’t seen each other in weeks, stare at one another helplessly. That is, until one of them boldly decides to speak.
"We're expected to fight here today," Steve's voice suddenly cuts through the tension in the room. It commands attention without demanding it, a conviction of truth in his tone.

"To turn on each other through fear and self preservation. And we could give them what they want. A bloodbath," here he pauses longer, lets the reality of his statements sink in. Let people realize what he's saying, that this is a choice.
"Or we can choose not to fight. To instead work together," an option so many seem not to even realize they have. "No one here has to die by our hands today," he knows his speaking won't be without consequence, but he does want to believe he'll be the only one to pay for this.
"This is a risk. One many of you are hesitant to trust, let alone take. But everything we do here is a risk to ourselves and those around us," nothing in the arena comes without putting your life on the line.
"I, for one, am willing to take this risk, to choose not to fight," Steve looks around the room, making eye contact with a few people as he does. He's not telling anyone what to do, this is for them to decides for themselves; their freedom of choice.
But he's got faith in the his fellow tributes. "And I've got a feeling I'm not alone.”

After the countdown ends, there’s a moment of utter still and silence. Then...
BOOOOOOOOOOOM
The room seems to erupt with noise and concussive force. The explosions are so violent that the muzak is paused in its tracks and shakes some of the Tributes off of their pedestals, and after the ice fog and smoke clears, it becomes apparent that fifteen of the Tribute pedestals and exploded there on the ice rink. Fifteen corpses lie mangled on the bloody ice: Deanna Winchester, Danny Fenton, Fili, Kili, Kain Highwind, Perry Kelvin, Julian Bashir, Clint Barton, Karkat Vantas, Sirius Black, Rahm Kota, Cinderella, Bunnymund, Robin, Rock Lee, and Rokk Krin.
The center of the ice rink remains completely intact and stocked with a few dozen keys of varying shapes and sizes. This is the Cornucopia and the Gamemakers are compelling the Tributes to skate for it.
The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces “The Arena is now open.” The Games have begun.

CORNUCOPIA
Steve Rogers || Open!
Keep strong.
And the arena starts.
Steve almost holds his breath in anticipation of what's about to happen, just how many will abstain from fighting and how many will try to take advantage of it. How much more blood will be shed.
Moving from his spot, Steve skates onto the ice with relative ease despite the bruising along his side and ribs that his outfit clearly shows. But it's his face that's in the worst visible condition; his right eye healing from a black eye and below it a brand that once clearly resembled the Capitol insignia, but has been abused enough to be torn and distorted.
He doesn't move for the keys yet, he waits, but when time has passed, he sees the actions people decide to take, he'll move forward and pick up one that's slid away from the rest of the pile.
((OOC: I welcome anyone to come attack Steve or get into an argument with him for what he's done. To be forewarned, there's a high possibility that some of his close CR will want to step in to his defense.))
hope this works?
Sadly, he does not feel fabulous. He feels ridiculous and is aware that he looks not only ridiculous but really exposed. Seriously, who knew these outfits were so...form fitting in the groin?
Sadly, Steve, beggars can't be choosers, especially here, when you're looking for pacifist allies. So, sure, others choose not to fight. He hopes there's no style requirement for it, though. Skating, though? He's got that down. Dennett Norton is a man full of surprises, so he'll skate on to a respectful distance.
"You're not alone." He gives a nervous laugh. "I mean, what's the worst that could happen here, right?"
Works perfect!

"You look like shit, Rogers," It might be a joke, but she isn't smiling. Then again, that might just be the way half her face is black, one eye still swollen under the blurred eagle-scar left behind by the Capitol's brand, "It's a hell of a thing."

He can't say what he wants to say, with cameras everywhere, and a need to get to his friends whom he has not seen in days, and to try to find some way to heal wounds like those that Steve is sporting, but he IS flashing Steve a gesture that he's learned here, raising his thumb in the man's general direction.

A little boy, bald and covered in tattoos, skated closer, just looking at Steve from afar for a moment. He seemed so... strange to Aang. Unfamiliar in so many ways. And he was hurt.
But Aang was never one to be frightened of differences. Only curious.
He skated on the ice, slipping between other Tributes before stopping in front of Steve, looking up at him with a sincere smile.
"Thank you."
Despite first impressions, he wasn't usually one to hug strangers. He liked people and had nothing against affection, but the Air Nomads usually greeted strangers with a bow, not a hug. But it seemed that ways were different here, because everyone else seemed to be hugging, and Aang was nothing if not ready to adapt.
So Aang went in for a very gentle but firm hug.

He stepped off the pedestal, skated a few wobbly steps in Cecil's direction, craning his neck to see -- no, it was no use.
So, Carlos turned back (ungracefully) to look at Steve, who was several yards away. He put his hands up, and he said, "A scientist shouldn't fight. That's not what a scientist is."
He's sporting a brand, too, on his right temple, unsettlingly close to his eye, and he looks unsteady on his feet. It's been a rough few weeks.

"Fuck," It's little more than a whisper, into the ice and then she's levering herself onto knees enough to start yanking at the skates. She's not fighting, not unless someone wants to make her, but she's going to be armed, one way or another, "Alright, Rogers, you fucking win."
Socks to the ice and bladed shoes in hand, she manages her feet and looks around for any hopefully-friendly faces.

The only sign that there's still a person in there is the way his ears flick, as Steve Rogers begins his speech. No, no, no, his conditioning screams, don't do that. The troll too far within to be acknowledged wouldn't be arguing.
The bombs go off. He flinches so hard, he stumbles out on to the ice and near falls flat. His wide eyes take in the corpses. Is he to clean them up? Should he wipe the blood away? They put him in the arena but they didn't make him to fight. What is he supposed to do?
He walks off the ice, slow and unsteady. The skates are uncomfortable but he doesn't take them off. He keeps his head down, walking from the cornucopia to stand off to the side of the ice rink. Wait for orders, wait for orders...

Dennett | Open
The explosions shocked him, and he knew he was supposed to make a move for the center of the rink, but he can't. Maybe someone, one of them, was still alive, or needed help. He was a doctor. He had to at least look.
He's skating (thanks to a childhood on Lake Michigan, it's something he's competent at) among the ruins of the pedestals, trying to find signs of life, almost oblivious to the mayhem in the Cornucopia proper.
"This," he mutters, "is outrageous." Because yes, that helps.

Mindy Macready
Steve was going on some bullshit tirade like they weren't the Capitol's whim, and she knew she should be paying attention, but she was in the zone. They weren't going to let this stand, and those tortured had learned it the hard way.
OK, Steve was bringing it together. She'd ask for the cliffnotes later, when she was feeling less paranoid. Right now...
The explosions rang out, and Mindy swore, ducking her head. Conversation over and...yeah, there were bodies now. There was Danny, one of hers, and she remembered the dwarves, killed one of them, that sucked.
Just how she thought it would play out. Fantastic. Shit.
No. Nope. Icy pit in her chest, painful tendrils over her face. One final indignity. Right. No way she thought for a minute this was just to light a fire under them. This was a lesson. No more insurrection. This suited her fine. Right about now she felt like killing some shit.
Wordlessly, she used her head, and put those days dad took her ice skating at Rockefeller Center to good use. Shift to one leg, then the other, go with the flow. She needed swag right now, and a clear head.

She'd just stepped off the pedestal when the explosion went off, sending her to the ice where she curled into the fetal position hoping to shield herself from whatever was going on around her. It didn't yet occur to her that this was a prime opportunity to grab a key. Instead, she just wanted to get away and hide.

Feferi Peixes | Open
That's about all she can gather before the explosion goes off.
She doesn't spot Karkat at first; her first priority is looking around to try and spot Sollux, then Eridan, and when she doesn't see any masses of yellow and purple, she deems them safe enough and capable of handling themselves on their own. And then a moment of indicision. She sees others go for the keys, watching a select few move on the skates. Is it worth it? She has to try, she's not going to lose just because she was too scared of falling to go for it.
Her first attempt to step onto the ice results in her falling straight on her knees, knocking them hard against the ice. A subsequent attempt has her falling on her read, and not getting all that much closer. Finally, she manages to get to her feet and V-walk to where the keys are. Scrambling for one before anyone else can grab it, she decides that's good enough and hightails it out of there. It's only then that she sees the bright red splotch, not all that distinctive from the human blood, but... is that horn?
She doesn't have time to think about it right now. Whatever's happened, if that really was Karkat, there's nothing she can do about it now. She needs to go find Sollux, so she high-tails it off the ice, pulling the shoes off as soon as she gets to the edge, tying the laces to sling them around her neck, and running off to try and get some sense of her bearings.

Rosalind Lutece | Open to all! No winnings for Rosa.
This time, she was hoping to take no prisoners. To go for the kill immediately, to win the Cornucopia and come out uninjured...but before she could launch out for the attack, Steve's speech met her ears. It was a little trite, perhaps, but he had a point - what good was playing into the expectations of these people? Looking down at herself, she cursed under her breath. She was many things - a scientist, a bit left of center, a passionate person...but a killer was just not among her traits, and she was not one to dance when someone told her to. Perhaps she could try to take a different tactic. Perhaps -
Deafening sounds interrupted her thoughts. She wobbled on her skates, struggling for her footing for a moment; when the dust settled, a hand moved to cover her mouth. Dead. So many dead, at the light touch of someone somewhere pushing a button. The notion was unsettling.
At the sound of the gong, she shook herself into action, lunging into broad strides across the ice. Blades ran over what was left of someone or other - a red trail was left in her wake, and she felt her stomach churn. She certainly made for the keys - but Steve's speech had worked. Her movements, while skilled (she had certainly had time to learn to skate), were plainly defensive. Rosalind was not interested in initiating an attack.
But she wasn't going to lie back and let anyone else get the jump on her, either.
at this point, I feel like Eddie enjoys trolling her so

It's a strange place she's in, but the ice is a good sign. She knows cold and ice, so at least there's an advantage. That doesn't stop it being incredibly overwhelming to see everyone in that circle along with her, dressed up to look flashy, but still looking drained and tired. But she sees familiar faces and then she remembers she has to fight these people, that this was the big moment that everyone had dreaded.
She wants to say she'll be prepared for this, but what she isn't ready for is the sudden speech that an unknown man gives out. She's not sure she's seen his face before, but the words capture her anyway when she realizes he's right. Especially after everything most of them had experienced together, how they fought hard together to save those they cared about, did they really need to fight each other? All she knows is that she needs to find Hiccup and Ruffnut as soon as time is up.
But Astrid doesn't have much to consider the possibilities of what to do when everyone has the ability to run, because as soon as the countdown is down, an explosion goes off in a nearby pedestral and she's thrown off from her own before she could make a move. She lands hard on the ice, something solid and very hot landing on her hip.
It prompts an immediate cry from her, knocking the heated podium debris, off with a hand quickly, albeit too late as a burn already forms along the side of her thigh. A pain jolting through her body, she lacks the strength to move, much less race across the ice, suddenly a lot more defenseless and vulnerable than she's used to.

Susannah | For Roland & Jake
And then that blond fellow from Harley's district starts making a speech and the corners of her mouth turn up in a smile because even if it's a damn fool speech to make, even if it'll get him killed, it means something that he's willing to make it, even if it's the worst time to try. She'll do it, she thinks, at least until the cornucopia's ov--
Her thoughts are interrupted by the explosion. And then, after, when the gong rings, she knows she needs to get to the keys, she can't take the time yet to figure out who the fallen are, she has to skate fast because she meant it, she's not going to fight until she's off this ice, not unless someone attacks her first, and if you don't want to fight you have to move fast.
In this case, it turns out to be pretty handy to be lower to the ground than anyone else. Susannah makes it to the keys, grabs one, and starts skating away to look for Roland.

Hubert Oswell || open!
An explosion is certainly not what he imagines, body tensing as he wobbles off balance, lowering a hand down to the podium he was on as he crouches, peering around. As the smoke clears and he coughs a couple of times, he quickly realizes that they're not playing games. Thankfully, Hubert cannot identify any of the dead-- immediately wondering what next step to take.
Everyone seems rather disoriented, and although he finds the action of not fighting something noble indeed, he'll still push himself to the ice, skating right for the Cornucopia. He's quiet, fumbling and slipping- not particularly artful at this. After a moment he manages to push off and give himself enough leverage, just barely keeping his balance as his skates glide him treacherously towards the center. After all, these keys probably unlock something, and whatever it is must have some sort of supplies waiting for him.
Dressed in his rather modest faded teal spandex skating suit that almost resembles something of a basket weave, along with embroidered golden strands of wheat adorning its design, Hubert makes it. He grabs for the keys, getting one- looking every which way all the while, wary. Not everyone was as idealistic as to forgo fighting entirely based on one, rather lingering speech, and he wasn't going to take any chances.
Clara Murphy
And then the bombs go off and the heat from one of the bombs licks at her right arm, not enough to cause any serious damage, but enough to hurt like a motherfucker. That's not even counting the shards of bone and ice skate that cut at her while she covers her face with her arm. And then there's the ringing in her ears from being so close to this many explosions that she isn't sure will ever actually go away.
Most of her thoughts about Steve being right fly away for a moment or two as she tries to make sure that she isn't so injured that she's now an easier target than she'd usually be.
She's vaguely aware of the sound of the gong going off and gets onto the ice with the grace of someone who spent the bulk of her winters ice skating for fun. Only this isn't fun, this is Clara Murphy on a mission to get a key, find her loved ones, and get out of the ridiculous outfit they've stuck her in.

Tess | open!
Wait - skates?
No time to protest or demand answers, she's pushed onto her pedestal and told to take a deep breath. The only thing Tess can think about is that she hasn't been skating in decades, wondering if she'd even remember how to, the skates like an extra dead weight on her feet.
With no idea who this guy is, the one making the speech, Tess half listens while looking around at everyone she can see. Where's Joel and Ellie? Clementine? Where's the little girl with the pink hair that she'd met weeks ago? These are all key people she's most concerned with finding. Shit - it's like she'd told Joel; they'll be separated and she'll know jack shit on what to do or where to go. Tess will be screwed. But she'll just have to make the most of it until she finds any one of them.
What the hell is the point of this speech? That thought crosses Tess' mind as her heart hammers with the rush of adrenalin running through her and making her clench and unclench her hands, ready for something to happen; they're just going to all end up dying in the end, anyway, no matter what they do to take a stand against the Capitol. That's her understanding of this, from what she's talked about with Joel.
Suddenly there are explosions, so many, all at once. At first something hot and wet splatters along her face so abruptly that she recoils, the small chunk of ice catching and nicking her hard enough in the left cheek to draw blood and bruise. Oh Christ -
Tess finds herself thrown sideways and landing painfully on her hip, sliding along the ice. Her skates drag as she goes, mangled and bloodied bits and chunks of ice raining down around. There's disorientation, confusion, ringing ears. Chaos. She's reminded of when she and Joel planned on crossing into the other Area of the Zone, how he'd shown the officers their identification booklets, and then how there had been the ear-splitting explosion feet away from them. They had ducked and then they had bolted, eager to not stick around. This is exactly how Tess responds after she's pushed herself up, scrambling to get her skates undone and kicked off. Eager to get out of this mess and find her people.
Like hell is she going to skate for what's at the cornucopia, she'll take the one skate with her as a weapon, however, to use as an axe and hack at anyone if they attacked her, running along the ice and trying not to slip on it and the blood and gore scattered around as she hurries for the keys, going to grab at the nearest one.
What a great start for her first arena.

But years of survival-by-reflex have already spurred her into action. She's ungainly on these skates, but she still manages to careen into the Cornucopia, grabbing a key with a flailing hand. Then she's on the move again, looking for an exit route through the crowd and the bodies.
What's left of the inspiration of Steve's speech (and maybe the fact that she's having a hard enough time just trying to move on these things, especially with this stupid dress they've put her in) sticks with her enough that she doesn't attack anyone, doesn't go for the throat. Let her have this one symbol, right? This one big fuck-you to the Capitol before she gets back to the business of surviving. If someone comes for her, she'll give them hell, but she's not going to attack people while they're fucking crying and going to people they haven't seen in weeks. She's not a monster.

Brainiac 5 and Lyle Norg | OTA
The fact that they were complete assholes.
They needed people to think it and this was a fine opportunity to make them do so. That was why, as they skated their way to the Cornucopia, they acted like the opportunistic nassheads they were pretending to be and tried to muscle people out of the way as they went, body-checking whoever was in their way.
They were very careful to not do it in a way that would cause major injury, maybe just a few bruises, but it would definitely be enough to leave an impression.
This was, after all, what two self-serving villains would do in a situation like this - take advantage of the relative peace for their own selfish gain.
Despite the ridiculous outfit he was wearing, with its mesh front, Brainiac 5 cut a particularly grim figure. His face and most of his outfit were still splattered with the blood of his friend Rokk.
[ooc: These threads will be relatively short and sweet since they'll be trying to move fast but it's a good place for people to get nasty impressions of them for later threads to plant seeds for CR later. Negative CR ahoy!]

MCU!Bucky | Open
The last week has been unpleasant, though nowhere near the worst of his life, honestly he can barely remember what happened past the start of it. Being taken from the cell and pushed into this ridiculous outfit (ridiculous because it has absolutely no combat applications) and then into the arena was actually something of a wakeup call from the protective haze his mind had retreated into. He was fully prepared to do what he was supposed to do when Steve opened his mouth and drew the attention of the Capitol down on himself.
When the explosions had sounded he had thought for one dizzying second they had killed Steve, but no, it was others, it was a warning. This was going to be harder than he'd originally planned for.
But at least for now Bucky's not fighting, not here anyway. He couldn't reach a key in time and now he's just silently skirting the edge of the ice rink after having snapped off the blades of the ice skates with his metal hand, dismissing the smeared blood and organs from dead tributes easily and waiting until he's certain no one will try to kill Steve before he takes off himself to map out the arena and find supplies if there are any. The brand on his face aches and itches, there for anyone to see.

Donatello | Open!
Don was nearly knocked off of his pedestal by the blasts. He could see...things...flying past him, but by some insane miracle, nothing hit him. But holy shell. Fifteen people. Some he knew. Many he didn't.
And...Julian. Karkat, even if they weren't friends, he was still something of a mainstay; having trolls usually was now, it seemed. Danny, they'd talked a few times, and the Easter Bunny--
The gong sounded, but Don's exit off the platform was slow, dazed. He wasn't planning on killing anyone today, if he didn't need to. Too many had died already.
Sigma Klim | Open
And that makes him deeply sad.
The gong rings out and Sigma rips the ice skates from his feet. Brandishing them like knives, he rushes forward to kill.
Sonja is open
Still the explosions and death did not come as much of a surprise to her as it seemed to have to others. The fool had spoken out, and so was given the fitting punishment. Which was, other, innocent people were punished. If the man thought of himself as being a martyr, he may wish to think again.
In the meantime though, Sonja skirted up towards the Cornucopia in an attempt to scrounge something up. Living on the frozen steppes had certainly helped gift her with an ability to move across the ice with relative ease.
