ARENA 09 - THE MUSEUM

The Tributes are woken up early for this Arena, and switched from whatever sleeping attire they're currently in to a set of pajamas, each designed for the individual in questions. Women wear onesies, and most of the men wear two-pieces, but other than that any similarities are at random - the outfits are in all sorts of colors and patterns.

The floor of the helicopter taking them to their Arena location, and of the underground entrance to the tubes that hoist them to the surface, will feel cold under their bare feet.

Rather than bringing them to sunlight, like the tubes have in the past, instead the Tributes are presented to a dark concrete ceiling in a badly-lit parking lot. Fluorescent lights do little to illuminate the cavernous space.

The countdown begins, announced as if from far away.

The Cornucopia, a ghastly thing carved from stone and concrete, sits at the center of a pattern of white and yellow lines reminiscent of spots for parked cars. The painted lines create a sort of spoked wheel, providing lanes for the Tributes leading to the prizes at the center. Some of the more unfortunate Tributes will find the concrete architecture has placed pillars in their lanes.

Six parked cars lie around the outskirts of the huge lot, barely visible in the dim lighting. Glowing exit signs on two opposite sides of the chamber announce where Tributes should go to escape the bloodbath. Elevator doors are perched beneath them.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

"What is—" Kili splutters up at Iskierka, entirely unbelieving. How could anyone not know about Erebor and her long history? Or Smaug? He stares up at her for a long moment, his brows furrowed as he tries to process the fact that she doesn't even recognize them, much less know them.

"Erebor's the greatest kingdom in Arda!" He protests, his brow still firmly furrowed. "Smaug took it from us!"

It's easy enough, provided that one isn't from the world where Erebor is, and Smaug lives. She knows more than enough about the various places she's been but none of the names that she knows really match anything she's heard so far.

"I have not heard of an Arda. Is it a place in Africa, perhaps?"

Kili can hardly believe the things he's hearing from Iskierka and he stares up at her, mouth ajar before he remembers to close it for just a moment. Already, there is more spilling out of his mouth, "No of course not! There's no Africa anywhere near Arda."

It takes him another long second before he realizes Ellie's point earlier: they're from different worlds. And, while Kili is still not likely to trust Iskierka, he at least has to recognize that she is not Smaug.

"You really haven't heard of it?" he asks, looking more disappointed than angry.

"I would have said so if I knew it. And it is nowhere that I have ever heard of."

Which is enough by her standards, and in any case, she's not really certain she'd want to go to wherever Kili is speaking of. Not if this how she would be treated if she did turn up there.

Still frowning, Kili does at least give up on the thought that he'll somehow slay Iskierka, whether inside or outside the arena. Not only do those claws look quite sharp and deadly, but she has no known association with Smaug. Perhaps he would simply continue to warn others of her, but for now she remained between him and his bow and there was little he could do about it.

"What are places you have heard of?" He continues with his questions without much pause.

That, at least, is something that Iskierka needn't thing much about to answer. If nothing else, she can manage that much, and it isn't as if people haven't been talking about the various places that they've been to. Or while they're getting from on to another, and half the time there isn't much else to do but listen.

"England, of course. And there is France as well, and the Americas and Africa. And China, I suppose."

England, France, Americas, Africa, China. Kili's heard of none of those places, and it shows plainly in the confused (if not mildly disdainful) frown on his face. Of course, he's also sure that none of them are nearly half as grand as Erebor or the Blue Mountains, or even the far off kingdom of men of Gondor. Though he's never seen the white city, he's positive it's better than this Americas Iskierka speaks of.

"Never heard of them," he replies with a disdainful snort, shaking his head.

Iskierka hasn't been very much impressed with any of them, that much is true. But that doesn't necessarily mean much in the long run. She's not generally impressed with a lot of things, and so what's a few more things besides.

"Then we cannot have been to the same places," she answers, as if this alone is enough to keep her from being as awful as Kili might have been expecting.
