ARENA 09 - THE MUSEUM

The Tributes are woken up early for this Arena, and switched from whatever sleeping attire they're currently in to a set of pajamas, each designed for the individual in questions. Women wear onesies, and most of the men wear two-pieces, but other than that any similarities are at random - the outfits are in all sorts of colors and patterns.

The floor of the helicopter taking them to their Arena location, and of the underground entrance to the tubes that hoist them to the surface, will feel cold under their bare feet.

Rather than bringing them to sunlight, like the tubes have in the past, instead the Tributes are presented to a dark concrete ceiling in a badly-lit parking lot. Fluorescent lights do little to illuminate the cavernous space.

The countdown begins, announced as if from far away.

The Cornucopia, a ghastly thing carved from stone and concrete, sits at the center of a pattern of white and yellow lines reminiscent of spots for parked cars. The painted lines create a sort of spoked wheel, providing lanes for the Tributes leading to the prizes at the center. Some of the more unfortunate Tributes will find the concrete architecture has placed pillars in their lanes.

Six parked cars lie around the outskirts of the huge lot, barely visible in the dim lighting. Glowing exit signs on two opposite sides of the chamber announce where Tributes should go to escape the bloodbath. Elevator doors are perched beneath them.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

"Excellent, we shall fill our holsters before we fill our bellies. And I will thank you for the help, though you're not the worst passenger I've ever had. You were awake and helpful, leastways, and you've no idea what a help that can be."

He turns them both toward the elevators, which are far more convenient and easy that he thinks they should be. If he had other easy choices he might take this to be a trap. But it gets them where they're going easily enough.

"There was something else in my pack that you might be able to make more use of than I can. It had plants on it, pictures of them, but I cannot read the words. Damned strange writing they have here."

The side of her mouth quirks. "Roland couldn't read letters from our world either," she says. "I'll read it for you, Bert. Though... I don't know how helpful the weapons displays will be. It said they were 'pre-modern.' That... probably means no guns." She hesitates, then says, "They'll probably wait to give us the guns, you know. They don't want the arena over so fast."
tis_allgood: (I had so long suffered in this quest)

It's Cuthbert's turn to smile then. "I don't need a gun to be deadly, a knife or a sling will do just fine, and sometimes better. Or did Roland not tell thee how skilled I was with nothing but a few balls of steel and a slingshot?"

Once they reach their destination floor he helps Susannah wheel in the direction they'd been heading in before. There's bound to be some half decent cover here somewhere.

"They'll have to give them to us eventually, why give us bullets and no guns, hmm? No use to it, none at all."

"Oh, he did," Susannah says, "but havin' guns around would make even the people who aren't Gunslingers a bit more dangerous."

Yeah, there definitely looks like there's some dioramas they can hide behind. "We'll get them, no doubt. I just figure they'll be some late-in-the-arena twist, that's all."

"'Twould be a waste to let thee and I clear this place on the first day, say true. We want to give them all the entertainment they deserve first." There's something a little twisted about the way Cuthbert says that. Even if he doesn't agree with what the Capitol is doing, he can at least enjoy stretching his kill skills muscles a bit. This way he won't fall out of practice at the things he's worked so hard to learn.

Susannah rolls her eyes at him. "You make it sound like we're a couple o' gladiators, like that Maximus fella. Which I s'pose we are, just... I doubt I'll ever get used to doing this just for their entertainment. It's not what we're for, you know. Entertainin' people."

"I would not mind being more like Maximus, after all, he won his freedom from this arena." He looks down at her with a look that hopefully conveys that he knows they're being observed. "'Tis not as if we have much choice, anyroad. We can stand still and let ourselves be killed and start all over again, or we can play their game for a chance at the slimmest reward. I know which I've chosen."

"Mm." Susannah shrugs. "And standin' still would mean we might not come back at all." It's a hard choice, but she understands why Bert makes it. And in Maximus' position, perhaps he--or she--could actually do something about Panem besides die for the Districts' sake.

"See, you even think like a Gunslinger. Now let's find a spot where we can get some rest and defend our ground."

He was glad he didn't have to defend his choices about playing along in the arena to anyone else.

Susannah shrugs. "I don't know if that's the choice Roland would make." She almost-- no, she doesn't wish him here, she wouldn't wish her worst enemy here, she wouldn't even wish that motherfucker Jack Mort here, but maybe, just maybe, she wishes she could ask him about this, about what to do.

Bert doesn't like to think about too many people from home. He misses them a lot and there's nothing he can do about it at the moment. "He's not here to say, and even if he was I fear he'd just ask us what we thought, we've been here longer, aye?"

He wasn't going to pretend to know Roland's mind on this or any matter. Well, he might, but this wasn't the time for trying to crack that difficult nut.

[personal profile] dividedgirlofmine 2014-02-25 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm." She wonders, not for the first time, what Roland's done since reaching his tower. If he's left. If he's survived. She doesn't know why, but it seems... fitting that Roland's story would just, well, end at the Dark Tower.

"I'm oldest. Does that make me dinh in his absence?"
tis_allgood: (I did turn as he pointed)

[personal profile] tis_allgood 2014-02-25 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
He smirks. "Careful now. I've been here longer than thee, and I have longer years of Cort's torture under my belt than you do. I think if anyone here could be called dinh it would be me."

An argument that she was the one in their tet who survived the longest is on the tip of her tongue, but she manages to keep from saying it. "If you go by who's been here longest, that means Eddie's our dinh and he doesn't even know what one is yet."

"Then he will make a poor leader. Mayhap we should let the tet lead us until we've settled ourselves. This is no time to argue about who is in charge."

And that means he should be the leader since he's the one who got them to stop fighting.

Susannah rolls her eyes. "It wasn't an argument, honey. Just idle talk to pass the time."

"Just as long as we know who's right in the end."

He is. Bert is right.

No. No he's not.

But sadly, there's no arguing with him.

Not right now there isn't.

For now they should hunker down somewhere safe and stay quiet.

end of thread, i think

Which is, in fact, exactly what they're gonna go do.
