ARENA 09 - THE MUSEUM

The Tributes are woken up early for this Arena, and switched from whatever sleeping attire they're currently in to a set of pajamas, each designed for the individual in questions. Women wear onesies, and most of the men wear two-pieces, but other than that any similarities are at random - the outfits are in all sorts of colors and patterns.

The floor of the helicopter taking them to their Arena location, and of the underground entrance to the tubes that hoist them to the surface, will feel cold under their bare feet.

Rather than bringing them to sunlight, like the tubes have in the past, instead the Tributes are presented to a dark concrete ceiling in a badly-lit parking lot. Fluorescent lights do little to illuminate the cavernous space.

The countdown begins, announced as if from far away.

The Cornucopia, a ghastly thing carved from stone and concrete, sits at the center of a pattern of white and yellow lines reminiscent of spots for parked cars. The painted lines create a sort of spoked wheel, providing lanes for the Tributes leading to the prizes at the center. Some of the more unfortunate Tributes will find the concrete architecture has placed pillars in their lanes.

Six parked cars lie around the outskirts of the huge lot, barely visible in the dim lighting. Glowing exit signs on two opposite sides of the chamber announce where Tributes should go to escape the bloodbath. Elevator doors are perched beneath them.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

Carlos's suspicious scowl holds for a moment. Just a moment. Then, it twists into the kind of smile you get when you're really, really trying not to. A beat later, Carlos gives in and chuckles.

He doesn't drop the club, but does swing it back to rest on his shoulder. Easy, nonthreatening, but not unguarded. "That was terrible." Mouse will hear the smile, though.

"No, no, no, see, what's terrible is you understood it. But, seeing we both made for the museum equivalent of the nerd's lunch table, it seemed worth a shot."

Planetariums. Where the real geeks gathered. But, overall, this was going well. Well enough he picks up the strolling thing again, making his way with only minor stumbling over the seats in front of him in the dim light towards the man.

"And it's Mouse."

"I'm Carlos," the scientist in question says. "And I won't hurt you. Not unless you give me a very compelling reason. Actually, I'd rather not hurt anyone at all," he goes on, grimacing. "But I saw what happened in the parking garage." There was so much blood -- so many deaths. Carlos still doesn't know that people come back when they die in the arena, and it's a testament to how used to violent death he has become that his voice is steady.

"Yeah...that. And I thought Black Friday was the worst blood bath human materialism had to offer."

Assuming, of course, Black Friday had ever actually been a thing and not just some cruel addition by the machines so they could get a few binary kicks out of human suffering. Whatever the truth on that one, Mouse still shuddered as he walked, remembering what the parking lot here had looked like after the 'shoppers' had left.

"But in that case, I propose a truce between our nations, Carlos."

Carlos considered the offer. "I was thinking of fortifying this place," he said. "The trouble is, there's two doors, and it would be impossible for me to guard both. I could block one off, but that would cut off an escape route, and I don't want to do that." He looked at Mouse, appraising. Skinny kid, unarmed, making nerdy jokes, Carlos mused. Probably not about to turn around and stab him in the back, and he could definitely use Mouse's help.

"Okay," he said. "A truce it is." Carlos put the mace down, sliding it under one of the planetarium chairs. Out of quick and easy reach. He'll hold out a hand for Mouse to shake, once they're close enough.

He accepted the offered hand, enthusiastically shaking it in commemoration of their new found alliance. Maybe having to make friends to avoid being horribly murdered by forces unknown wasn't the best thing to celebrate, but to be fair Mouse couldn't remember the last time he'd met someone under any other circumstance.

"Let's get to work."

[ooc: Call this thread over? Carlos will just show Mouse around the hardware and be delighted that Mouse knows how to work it too, and they'll talk about guarding the doors and getting food etc etc until Carlos goes out to the cafeteria and meets Julian.]
