ARENA 09 - THE MUSEUM

The Tributes are woken up early for this Arena, and switched from whatever sleeping attire they're currently in to a set of pajamas, each designed for the individual in questions. Women wear onesies, and most of the men wear two-pieces, but other than that any similarities are at random - the outfits are in all sorts of colors and patterns.

The floor of the helicopter taking them to their Arena location, and of the underground entrance to the tubes that hoist them to the surface, will feel cold under their bare feet.

Rather than bringing them to sunlight, like the tubes have in the past, instead the Tributes are presented to a dark concrete ceiling in a badly-lit parking lot. Fluorescent lights do little to illuminate the cavernous space.

The countdown begins, announced as if from far away.

The Cornucopia, a ghastly thing carved from stone and concrete, sits at the center of a pattern of white and yellow lines reminiscent of spots for parked cars. The painted lines create a sort of spoked wheel, providing lanes for the Tributes leading to the prizes at the center. Some of the more unfortunate Tributes will find the concrete architecture has placed pillars in their lanes.

Six parked cars lie around the outskirts of the huge lot, barely visible in the dim lighting. Glowing exit signs on two opposite sides of the chamber announce where Tributes should go to escape the bloodbath. Elevator doors are perched beneath them.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

She stays still for a moment, like a deer that's heard something, but no one emerges from the darkness. Eventually she moves over to the case of some ancient Chinese blades and tip-toes over the glass on the floor. She takes them one at a time, weighing them in her hands until she finds one she likes the balance of.

"That wax figure has socks," she says, pointing to a diorama of an Ainu family. She hobbles over and rips the sock off, wrapping it around her heel so she doesn't have to limp not to track blood. The balls of her feet stay bare, which will help her not slip around on the marble floor. "Take a knife. You might need it to open things or cut up our clothes for material."

Or stab someone, but she doesn't say that. They're clearly in the section on Asian culture, and Venus walks over to a figure of a samurai warrior. Someone's already taken most of the armor off, but not the chest-piece - maybe it was a bad size.

She unstraps it and brings it over to Kankri. "Here. Wear this. Could save your life."

Kankri balks at being told to take a knife, but what she's saying makes sense. There's plenty of uses for a blade that don't involve hurting people.

First, though, he struggles into the armor she gives him - and then glances up at her, worried. "What about you? You're already hurt, you should get some kind of protection."

Now he goes to the case with the knives, lifting them out gingerly one by one to find the sturdiest and sharpest one. He doesn't want to hurt people. He's not going to hurt people. But he might as well have the best knife he can for whatever he needs a knife for.

Not that he knows much about knives anyway, but oh well. There's a spot on the cumbersome leathery chest plate to hang a knife from, so gingerly he does just that. There.

"Okay," he says. "What next?"

"Everything here is made for men, and it's too heavy for me. Besides, I need to be able to move fast when I attack. My fighting style is used to spandex." She pulls her hood tight around her neck, slipping the knife into the same pouch as the pastry.

"Next we find shelter. How much food was there, you think? If there's a lot, people will take it and run. If it's seriously limited, they'll set up base there and protect it."

"Oh," he says quietly. He feels so lost. This is really overwhelming, and his desire to live is warring with his desire to just do right. Even committing himself to survival tears at his pacifist nature, in all honesty, because even if he doesn't offer anyone violence...the fact is, getting things that might save his life may mean that someone else can't use them, that someone else will die. He doesn't know how to reconcile it, so he really doesn't want to think about it right now.

He clears his throat a little after Venus asks him about tactics, and straightens slightly. "There were certainly far more baked goods in the cafe than I could ever eat, but they likely won't last long. As I said, I've only been on the first two floors, so I don't know if there might be something else on the other ones. But there seems to be plenty provided, for the moment. Which makes sense if they're putting us in an urban environment where unpackaged food would be scarce anyway."

"There's what, eighty of us in here?" Venus scrunches her eyebrows together as she thinks. "This is a museum. There should be museum maps somewhere...probably the first floor."

Which will mean facing the elevators again. She takes a deep breath and assesses how the armor looks on Kankri. It's evident that he's not made for this sort of hell.

"They also made weapons easy to get this time. This isn't the same old survival game it usually is. My money's on there being way more monsters this time."
