Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be

Who| All those on the breakout mission and all those being made to fight against them.
What| The liberation of District 6.
Where| District 6.
When| This week.
Warnings/Notes| War, violence, death. Please warn for more in headers.

District Six stretches out for miles, a wide expanse of red and brown dirt with only the slightest hint of mountains in the distance. The air is starchy and arid, sucking the moisture right out of the eyes and mouth. The sun pummels down. Everything about the District screams of harshness, of elements cruel in their intensity and exposure being a serious concern. Combatants are advised to hydrate and try to avoid heatstroke in the temperatures rising above a hundred and fifteen fahrenheit.

People in District Six are too poor to consider their safety, already risking it every day in their jobs at the auto manufacturer with huge under-kept machines and toxic exhaust as they build cars and hovercrafts. Though they know they’re the epicenter of another attack, they go back to their assemblylines, under the watchful and paranoid eyes of Capitolite foremen. There’s an anxious air about the place. People drop their wrenches sometimes and make their screws extra tight, as if fortifying the vehicles against the coming storm.

They’ve been told that there are Rebels attacking, and so the residents here have diligently placed landmines throughout the desert; the wind has already erased all traces of where they are. Other than that, there are machine guns at each factory, aimed towards anyone - anyone - who approaches.

Between that, and subservience, there's not much in the way of propoganda. Most of what's done are the chalk drawings of children. A watch. A coin being flipped. A very small arrow with flame.

Vultures circle high overhead.

Firo bites his lip as he listens. It has to be an act, right? Sandy's a sharp kid, so she wouldn't buy into the Capitol's lies. Maybe she's just putting on an act.

"Me? Just listenin' to my friends not answer the questions I ask."

He wonders if he should let it slide--chalk it up to nerves or something--but he doesn't. "I meant what's wrong, not what you've been doin'. You're actin' weird."

"I'm sorry."

She did not sound sorry.

"I am not sure how else I should be acting. We are heading into battle, how should I be acting?" Her voice remained stiff and focused. Not irritated or exasperated, not even afraid. Her eyes remained pointed at the road save for when they would flick to the various screens that provided them images of the sides and back of their vehicle.

"Just... like you normally do."

Of course, circumstances weren't normal--as she'd just pointed out, they were going into battle. Was she scared? Firo wouldn't be so disrespectful as to directly ask if she's scared--that'd just be insulting--so he offered something else instead.

"Look, I'll do my best to make sure nothin' happens to you. Between the two of us, we'll get outta this scrape just fine."

"My life is not as important as victory in this battle."

If he didn't have enough alarm bells in his head by now there was a bucketful of fresh ones.

"It's more important that we crush the rebels for the Capitol. After all they've done for us we owe it to them."

There was still no actual passion to the words, though her fingers curled tighter on the wheel and she began to turn it so they could swerve around a mangled pile of scrap in the road.

"I only wish the Capitol had shown me the truth sooner."

AH! That little voice in the back of her head felt satisfied with that bit of oversharing.

If she hadn't been driving, he would've been tempted to grab her and make her look him in the eyes when he spoke. Her words were all troubling--far too troubling to let slide.

"Can it. I'd--" He gritted his teeth to keep from saying something that'd be deemed traitorous. He'd already been in trouble bad once, thanks to what he and Eowyn did with the peacekeeper powers. "--you're important too. I'm not gonna let you be careless."

"No." She protested softly, the sort of stern voice a student might use when trying to explain their homework to someone. "I cannot be careless because The Capitol depends on us to make this mission a success."

Wrong message to take away from that really.

"You seem agitated. Are you the one who is scared?" She offered in a challenge as the sound of gunfire announced they'd arrived to the battle field. More erratic evasive manuvers will be required.

"Then you can't be careless with your own life either. Think of it like an asset."

"Excuse me?" His voice rose in anger, and he had to consciously bring it down. She was just a kid; he shouldn't yell at her. "I'm not scared of anything these bastards can throw at us. I'm just... Just wor--concerned about the way you're talkin'."

It'd border on insult to talk to one of his fellow gangsters that way, and he's even reluctant to do so with her. But there's no getting around it: he's afraid for her.
