Arena 14: A Grimm Age

The morning breaks to a familiar routine for most of you. Bright and early the Tributes are roused by their escorts and stylists, escorted from their rooms and to the waiting hovercraft. The flight takes them a few hours out from the Capitol and after landing they are escorted quickly into an underground complex to be prepped. Tributes will find to their dismay that their outfits are a little less practical and a little more costume this time around, the ratio of which depends entirely on the whims of their stylist. Peacekeepers will appear almost immediately after they've finished dressing to put them in the waiting launch tubes.

They rise up from the ground and -- phew, what's that smell? The Tribute's look around them to see a full-on medieval village, constructed entirely from wood and thatch. There are empty pens that might have once held pigs and chickens attached to the houses and a well is visible down the street. What commands attention though is what's in the centre of the village square where the Tribute's are standing; a pyre built around a tall wooden stake. Those who look amongst the piles of twigs and wood will see the gleam of weapons, as well as backpacks containing survival supplies. This is your Cornucopia, Tributes.

Anyone who tries to look further afield, over the roofs of the houses, will see the main feature of this arena looming above them. The castle stands tall and forbidding, a monstrous sized building of stone with flags bearing the emblem of the Capitol flying from its parapets. From here, if they squint, they can see the drawbridge is down and the portcullis is open. For now.

A triumphant sounding of trumpets is what signals this arena's beginning and with it those Tribute's with powers may feel a sudden tingling in their bones, a rush of energy as those powers are restored to them. Any with constantly active abilities will find a light illuminates immediately over their head, signalling that something about this powered arena is going to be a little different from the last. For those who try to use their powers right off the bat... well, they'll be in for a nasty shock.

[[OOC: A mod reminder that this arena is designed to punish Tribute's for using powers. If your character will attempt to use powers at any time in week 1 of the arena it needs to be reported here to be RNG'd by the mods for chances of success or injury.

There will be a thread on Death Roll posts for subsequent weeks power usage to be reported.]]

Cullen's voice pierces through the pain haze, even as the mark settles back into place. She doesn't move, however, her eyes squeezed shut as the pain ebbs slowly away. She knows she needs to move, but she just manages to nod her head.

"The Anchor--" she manages to reply to his question, after a moment.

"Maker's breath," he mutters as he realizes what she must mean - her magic is back, but so is the mark. And she's in pain, clearly. "Here, let me - I can carry you, if I have to."

And he will. If she can't walk on her own, he'll get her away from the worst of the bloodshed, or die trying.

She finally manages to lift her head up, her right hand slowly uncurling from around her left wrist and she pushes herself up. She curls her left hand closed over the glowing mark, drawing it in against her chest as she reaches for Cullen's shoulder to steady herself.

"Help- Help me up. It's... getting better," she breathes, and she knows they need to get out of the area. When she catches movement in her peripheral vision she throws her hand out again without thinking, casting a barrier spell around them both. The movement she'd caught in the corner of her eye hadn't been anything more than her imagination, but she knew a barrier would offer them some protection, and it frankly helped override the pain in her hand somewhat with the sheer joy of being able to use magic again.

"We need to- move."

Cullen almost doesn't notice the shield, as focused as he is on her. If anything, his arms around her as he tries to help her to her feet are his own way of shielding her, as best he can, from anything that might come.

"Here," he says, helping her up. "We'll get you somewhere out of the way, then we'll look for the others, alright?"

She leans on him even after he's helped her to her feet, nodding her head. It's of course, not another tribute that suddenly explodes from the nearby brush to attack, but several rats that bounce uselessly off the invisible barrier as they try to get at Adella.

"What in the-?" She drifts off, looking at the little creatures, before shaking her head. "Let's get out of here."

"Knowing this place, they carry plague," Cullen mutters darkly in the direction of the rats, his focus on supporting the woman leaning against him as he moves them in a direction away from the cornucopia.

"How bad do you think it is?" he asks quietly. "As it was in the beginning?"

Which of course is his way of asking - but not actually asking - if it's killing her.

The rats persisted, following and squeaking angrily every time they bounced off Adella's magical shield, before eventually veering off to chase after other tributes. Adella almost didn't notice the peculiar behavior, as she focused on her hand.

She realizes what Cullen is asking after a long moment of silence, and she shakes her head.

"No it's... It hurts, but it's getting better. When the Rift was unstable the pain just kept getting worse." So while it would've been a hell of a way for them to kill her, the Gamemakers had at least been kind in that respect.

Cullen lets out a breath he wasn't aware he was holding in at her answer, and he squeezes her shoulder gently. "Alright, well, that's a start. Anything else I should know about?"

She shakes her head, letting out a breath as she slowly flexes her fingers, her grip on him not loosening.

"Nothing you can't see for yourself."

"Alright, then we're moving," he says, his grip firm but gentle as he lifts her in his arms and begins moving away from the cornucopia as fast as he can manage, carrying another person.
