ARENA 11-PaneMall

It’s pre-dawn when the Tributes are roused from their beds and sent to their tubes. Those who’d been imprisoned for the past few weeks had their heads covered before transport to the staging area, and there’s an air of confusion surrounding just about everything that’s happening until the stylists and managers arrive on the scene and try to calm everyone down. The reunions may be happy, but they're sadly very temporary.

The first clue that something strange is happening comes from their clothing: figure skating costumes with bright colors and sequins and ice skates strapped to their feet. Some may even find it difficult to stand with the blades on their feet, but as they're placed into the arena, all becomes clear. The mall skating rink seems quiet and quaint, especially after weeks of uncertainty and stress. Too bad the peace and quiet can’t last.

Above the ice rink (which houses all 100+ Tributes) there are floors with shops looking over them. Large, bright fluorescent lights dot the multi-storied ceiling and create a warm, nostalgic glow to the place. Benign music is piped in from various hidden speakers to compliment the intended mood of fun and commerce.

The countdown continues and the Tributes, some of whom haven’t seen each other in weeks, stare at one another helplessly. That is, until one of them boldly decides to speak.

"We're expected to fight here today," Steve's voice suddenly cuts through the tension in the room. It commands attention without demanding it, a conviction of truth in his tone.

"To turn on each other through fear and self preservation. And we could give them what they want. A bloodbath," here he pauses longer, lets the reality of his statements sink in. Let people realize what he's saying, that this is a choice.

"Or we can choose not to fight. To instead work together," an option so many seem not to even realize they have. "No one here has to die by our hands today," he knows his speaking won't be without consequence, but he does want to believe he'll be the only one to pay for this.

"This is a risk. One many of you are hesitant to trust, let alone take. But everything we do here is a risk to ourselves and those around us," nothing in the arena comes without putting your life on the line.

"I, for one, am willing to take this risk, to choose not to fight," Steve looks around the room, making eye contact with a few people as he does. He's not telling anyone what to do, this is for them to decides for themselves; their freedom of choice.

But he's got faith in the his fellow tributes. "And I've got a feeling I'm not alone.”

After the countdown ends, there’s a moment of utter still and silence. Then...

BOOOOOOOOOOOM

The room seems to erupt with noise and concussive force. The explosions are so violent that the muzak is paused in its tracks and shakes some of the Tributes off of their pedestals, and after the ice fog and smoke clears, it becomes apparent that fifteen of the Tribute pedestals and exploded there on the ice rink. Fifteen corpses lie mangled on the bloody ice: Deanna Winchester, Danny Fenton, Fili, Kili, Kain Highwind, Perry Kelvin, Julian Bashir, Clint Barton, Karkat Vantas, Sirius Black, Rahm Kota, Cinderella, Bunnymund, Robin, Rock Lee, and Rokk Krin.

The center of the ice rink remains completely intact and stocked with a few dozen keys of varying shapes and sizes. This is the Cornucopia and the Gamemakers are compelling the Tributes to skate for it.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces “The Arena is now open.” The Games have begun.

Astrid's barely had time to adjust herself on her feet, getting used to her movements again despite the new disadvantage of her burn when she hear her name shouted off in the distance--Hiccup.

He's alive. She's lost count of how many times she's had to repeat that to herself. Finding him when she thought he was killed from the previous arena, seeing him in the jail cell, and now after those fierce explosions. There were risks time and time again, but he still had his luck, and she was ever thankful for it.

Thoughts of her burn disappear when he rushes over and she feels the squeeze of his arms around her, something she'd taken for granted before they were completely separated in that cell. Her arms grip around him tight, hesitant when he pulls away.

"I'm fine," Partially, anyway. Her hip was killing her right now. "But you--Hiccup, are you okay?" Because last she saw him, he wasn't all there. He probably still wasn't now, but at least she could touch him, hold him if he were to fall into that dark place again. At least here, they didn't need to be separated.

She was alive. Alive. For now, anyway, but even if she died now, at least that meant she had a chance of coming back. The others dying in the explosions probably were gone for good - a show of power like that was more powerful if they stayed dead.

"I - I - I - I'm still seeing things. I don't think wh what they did to me has worn off yet." But some of the terror the injections had caused, the overwhelming anxiety, that had faded somewhat. "But now I - I know that what I'm seeing isn't real. It's easier to tell it's not - it's in my head."

That meant it was possibly wearing off, though the trauma itself was something that would possibly take him much longer to recover from.

"I can tell. The ice is made of blood. All of it. The blood from the explosion it's - all the ice is made of it now but I'm pretty sure that's not the case." He added timidly, desperate to have it confirmed that it was in his head, "Right?"

"ACK!"

Ruffnut had been racing around so fast that she almost missed Hiccup and Astrid completely. Turning sharply she was forced to do a sort of awkward scramble to kill her momentum before she finally fell forward face first and crashed to the ice sliding across it leaving a trail of smeared blood in her wake before coming to a stop at Hiccup and Astrid's feet.

For this arena they'd let her hair out and it was long and thick, currently stained with gore. A short plaid shirt showed off most of her mid section including a very scarred up back (Most of the scars were from her life before this place but a sharp eye could spot the new ones. Fresh whip lashings for not co-operating with interrogations.)

"sup guys?" She asked from the ground with her fist curled tightly around something. "I totally grabbed Thor's butt." she added sounding smug and clearly not taking any of this for as horrible as it really was.

"It's just ice, Hiccup. There's nothing to worry about, okay? I'll be here to tell you everything that's real. And all of that--it'll all go away. But I'm here and I'm real, alright?"

No, he still wasn't entirely himself, but he was much better and they were at least together now. Finding each other fast meant she could watch over him immediately. Though she wasn't exactly the most useful now in her current condition. She'd have to get that taken care of somehow. She needed to make sure he and Ruffnut would be alright.

And speaking of which, their friend seemed to arrive right on cue, though not with the most elegant entrance. "Ruffnut!"

Normally, she'd respond to her ridiculousness with a roll of her eyes, but the circumstances were a little different this time around. And with all they'd gone through, her primary concern was everyone's health and safety. "Gods, Ruff, are you alright?"

Hiccup was tremendously reassured by Astrid's presence, as per the usual, mostly because he knew she was competent enough to protect both him and herself. The prospect of dying was scary but the prospect of her dying while trying to protect him was much scarier, so it was reassuring to know she'd possibly be able to stave off both.

For now, at least. But he was more concerned about long-term survival anyway. They'd probably all die in this place but they had to at least live long enough to be interesting so they'd be revived.

When Ruff skated up, Hiccup was still with it enough to give Ruff the "what the Hel, Ruffnut" look. It was identical to the "what the Hel, Tuffnut" look because usually it was given to the both of them at the same time. He was totally un-fussed by the blood - she wouldn't have been crowing about touching Thor's butt if all that blood was hers.

"Pretty sure that's not hers if she's been able to go around touching the rear ends of deities." He took in a deep breath. "Okay, okay, so, we need to get to the center of the -"

He waved vaguely at where everyone was scrabbling. "And see if we can get some supplies."

Ruffnut continued to grin proud of herself and nodded confirming that she was in fact, not dying.

"Huh?" Ruffnut glanced in the direction that he was gesturing. "Oh that stuff? Yeah there are no supplies. Just these."

She promptly and shamelessly shoved a hand down the front of her skimpy plaid shirt and produced a single small key. Thinner and more refined then any key they could have made on Berk.

"Bunch of em. Some of them look different but this is the only one I could get a hold of. I had to fight a furry monster for it." She added for good measure.

"Keys? That's helpful, I guess," she notes, though there's still a hint of sarcasm to it. From what she's learned, they were usually supplies to snatch. Even if they were to unlock something, it's not like they would know what the keys would actually lead to (if they led to anything at all).

She tries to keep balance on her skates, but with the increasing pain of the pain, she finds it's practically impossible to move without keeping a hand on Hiccup's arm. "Is there some possible way we can get our hands on more?"

She's sure she would have been on the run for a few already, if she didn't already get blasted with a darn handicap.

"We should go for it anyway. For all we know, each key leads to a different locked box with a different bit of food or supplies inside," he said. He looked over at Astrid and at the milling group vying for keys. It wasn't the usual bloodbath these things supposedly had so that was something at least.

"I think I'm with it enough to make a run for it if you are."

Having more than one key might be to their benefit.

"Alright! Team Berk all the way!"

Ruffnut was clearly on board and after stuffing the key back into her clothes she grabbed hold of both her clanmates shoving them along the ice without any particular care for where she was shoving her hands even if it aggravated Astrid's wounds.

And aggravate Astrid's wounds it did, but the blond only bit hard on her lip to keep from making any audible signs of the pain, not wanting to already be a weakness in their group when she was the one who vowed to protect them both now that she was here.

"Yeah, let's do it. Best to get as much of an advantage as we can," she manages to say without too much of a display of her actual pain as she slides across the ice.

"I think I can manage to stay upright at the absolute bare minimum required to actually move in a specific direction, so let's go."

And with that he started to skate. As dizzy as he was, by now skating was almost second nature and since it involved gliding motions, it was actually somewhat easier to adjust to the times he veered a little bit.

If they stuck together they could help each other maneuver around the throngs of people (and aggressively shove the ones in the way) anyway.

Unfortunately, despite their relative deftness at dealing with their old, sworn enemy, ice, there wasn't really anything left to grab when they got there.

"Dammit."
ruffntumblenut: (Oh my gods)

"Well at least we still have mine." Ruffnut sighed in an uncharacteristically optimistic way. She reached for the key hidden in her shorts and then looked startled. Patting herself frantically and grabbing herself in what was probably inappropriate she looked frantic for a minute and then relaxed drawing the key out of the waistband near her back.

"Yep...we still have mine."

For however long it took her to lose it anyway.

INCOMING

Bam

Suddenly, a small child was attached to Hiccups waist in the biggest hug such a tiny creature can provide. "Hi there!"

If she had been in a better condition, she might have been able to snatch up something. It was practically embarrassing for a group of Vikings to be failing so miserably this early around on ice, of all things.

"Well, it's better than nothing, so I guess we can just—"

He comes out of nowhere, this strange unknown child, that even Astrid's left wide eyed in surprise. "H-hey! Let go of him!"

The boy wasn't hurting him or attacking and it was clear from how Hiccup wasn't shoving him away that he wasn't upset by it.

He was just being hugged.

Why? Why was he being hugged? This was not a world where you got randomly hugged. This was a world of pain and pointless death and needles and nightmares dancing in front of his eyes. It was a world of cruelty.

It didn't have things like people that gave you random hugs in it.

Except it did. It did and it reminded Hiccup that the Capitol people that hurt them weren't the only people here. There were other Tributes beyond just the two (three if you counted Thor) he trusted implicitly and they could be kind, even to strangers. There were people beyond this world that were still good, back home and in countless other worlds.

He needed the reminder. He needed the reminder that in a very wide universe there were the kind of people that hugged other people when they'd been told to kill.

He didn't quite hug back because of the strangeness of it, but he didn't pull away either, standing there completely overwhelmed, starting to cry silently.

"Uh..." Ruffnut was taken aback by this blatant show of affection for a total stranger and tilted her head slightly as if that would help her better understand.

"Hey Astrid I think that bald girl is trying to steal Hiccup." She commented puzzled but not as upset.

"I'm a boy."

That would be the only acknowledgement Aang gave to the girls, because he could feel the gentle shake in the man's diaphragm that came with both laughter and tears. He had no idea which was provoking the movement, but either way, he was holding on like a little limpet until the man asked him to get off.

Some people really needed a hug, and it was open season for Aang.
