After way too long of worrying and being pissed - both at himself and at Steve - and being so damn afraid, it's real hard to sit out here on the other side of the room, knowing Steve's in there.
When Bucky'd shown back up with him the night before, Sam'd been relieved to see them both, even with Steve looking in as bad of shape as he did. But then Bucky'd explained to him what was going on, in hushed tones as they worked together to get Steve settled on the bed, to take care of him as best as they can - and Sam should have known. Of course it wouldn't be this easy, of course the Capitol wouldn't have held on to Steve as long as they did just to turn him lose to them.
Of course doing... whatever the hell they'd done to rid Steve of the serum wouldn't be the only punishment.
But Sam'd pushed it aside, because right then, the important thing was keeping Steve alive and getting him past this fever. Sam'd stayed with him until it was obvious there was nothing more he could do and longer - he'd have stayed with Steve right until he woke up, if he could, the way he had back when Steve was in the hospital. He hadn't wanted Steve to wake up alone then, and he doesn't want him to now, but if Bucky's right about Steve being terrified of them, well. As much as it hurts, Steve'd probably feel better waking up alone.
So he was outside, guarding the room in case any Tributes or gamemaker threats came their way, a dagger in his lap and a first aid at his side. When the door opens, Sam scrambles to his feet, dropping the dagger to the ground.
There's a moment of hope, but the wariness in Steve's eyes when he sees him dashes that pretty quickly. "Hey," he says quietly, hands spread wide to try to show he means no harm. "It's okay, man, I'm not looking to hurt you. I just wanna talk."
